Abstract

This study was designed to identify the relationship between the self-care agency and the quality of life of cancer patient. The subjects for this study were 108 cancer patients received cancer therapy at one general hospital in Seoul. The date were collected during the period from September 13 to September 27, 1993 by means of a structured questionnaire. Self-care agency was measured by the Self-As Carer Inventory that has been developed by Geden & Taylor and translated by So, Hyang Sook and modified by the author of this study. A questionnaire which has been developed by U.S.A National Conference on Cancer Nursing was modified by Kwon, Young Ean to measured quality of life. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation and simple regression using the SPSS program. The results were as follows : 1. There were significant associations between self-care agency and sex, educational level, monthly income, main caregiver, region of tumor and experience of operation(t=2.22, p<.05 ; F=6.12, p<.01 ; F=3.37, p<.05 ; F=3.87, p<.05 ; F=4.53, p<.05 ; t=-2.03, p<.05) 2. There were significant associations between quality of life and in patients/out patients, sex, monthly income, ownership of house and the number of symptoms excluding pain(t=-3.40, p<.001 ; F=2.05, p<.05 ; F=3.06, p<.05 ; t=2.02, p<.05 ; F=4.74, p<.05) 3. The relationship between self-care agency and quality of life revealed a significant correlation (r=.337, p<.001) 4. By means of simple regression analysis, self-care agency provided predicted 11.4% (F=13.63, p<.001) of quality of life. The equation induced for expected quality of life was as follows : Quality of Life = 2.878+(Self-care Agency¡¿0.610) In conclusion, this study revealed that self-care agency may be important factor that can improve quality of life in cancer patients. Therefore, cancer patients should be provided nursing intervention that can promote the self-care agency.
